Description
Irish sea moss is a type of red algae found on the shores of the North Atlantic surrounding Ireland, Europe and North America. For hundreds of years, it has been used for medicinal purposes. In fact, it got its name because it was often used as a source of nutrients and food during the Irish Potato famine of the 1800s. Like a lot of algae, Irish sea moss contains high amounts of certain nutrients, including folate, vitamin K, iron, iodine, magnesium, and calcium. Here’s a list of a few vitamins and minerals found in Sea Moss
- Potassium
- Calcium
- Magnesium
- Selenium
- Vitamins A, K, and E
- Zinc
- Folate
- Manganese

Sea Moss is rich in amino acids, vitamin C, vitamin A, omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and minerals. It contains 92 of the 102 minerals that our bodies need like zinc, iodine, iron, and more! Because it is mucilaginous (sticky and thick), it helps soothe the mucus membranes in the body and helps your body get rid of any excess mucus. It is especially helpful in reducing congestion and clearing out phlegm buildup in the lungs, which is particularly helpful when you are dealing with a cold. Sea Moss is also a prebiotic and helps to get rid of bad bacteria in the gut, which further increases digestive health.
It’s also great in skincare. See our Irish sea moss soap.
