VEGAN CHICHA DE ARROZ

VEGAN CHICHA DE ARROZ

It’s a rainy day  today even though it’s suppose to be summer (Hello Dutch weather). You know, I often feel nostalgic when it rains. I remember rainy days back at home at Curaçao and I can almost feel the smell of rain making its way to my nostrils. I remember the chilly feeling in the backyard and the beautiful sight of the sky all shades of grey. Oh and the sound of it.  It’s unforgettable, it feels like a permanent tattoo in my ears. This chicha drink, reminds me of home as well

JUMP TO RECIPE

I remember having this drink on a sunny day after school. It was the best feeling ever. Refreshing, very sweet, thick and just delicious. Chicha is a Venezuelan drink made from rice and milk. Where the name chicha comes from, I have absolutely no idea. If I could translate it in English it would be: “Sweet drink made out of rice and milk”

There are different types of chicha. For example in Perú, they have “chicha morada” made of corn and it has a strong purple color. The colombian chicha is also made of corn but isn’t purple. The Venezuelan chicha, like I said,  is made of rice and milk and I will show you how to do it! It is VERY easy and affordable. You will thank me later

It all starts with basmati rice. I haven’t tried it with other types yet, but I couldn’t imagine it any other way. Basmati rice is a highly aromatic type of rice, hence the name which means “fragrant” or “aromatic.” Long-grained, extremely aromatic, with a light nutty flavor. It will give your drink the perfect taste.

Add plant based milk, coconut condensed milk, a dash of salt and vanilla extract. Top with ground cinnamon for an extra umph! All vegan and oh so delicious! Aaaanyway, I will keep my story short so you can go and make this drink.

I really hope you enjoy this recipe and if you do make it, don’t forget to tag me on Instagram or Facebook and use the hashtag #TheFQWay. I’d love seeing your take on this recipe.
